Rachel Silverstein
Rachel Silverstein recently completed her Ph.D. at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science in the Marine Biology and Fisheries department. Her dissertation work focused on the effect of climate change on reef corals, for which she used genetic methods to answer ecological questions. Her work was completed with support from the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship, among other funding sources. During her Ph.D., Rachel also conducted outreach ranging from writing articles about science– including a Letter to the Editor was published in the journal Science–to mentoring undergraduate, middle, and high school girls on their science fair projects. Rachel graduated cum laude in 2006 from Columbia University with a degree in Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology. Rachel is currently a Knauss Sea Grant Fellow in Marine Policy the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee on the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard. Rachel is originally from La Jolla, California.
