Mark Cohen, our “artist in residence” for the Children’s Issue, approaches his street photographs, mainly taken in his hometown of Wilkes-Barres Pennsylvania, with what has become known as his iconic “grab shots”. The work featured in this issue, all dating from the late 1970s, presents a time when children were teetering between the idyllic notion of “childhood” and the complicated reality of childhood today.
In 1973 Cohen’s work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Since then his work has become part of major public collections such as The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
