Ernesto Caivano
Ernesto Caivano was born in Madrid, Spain. He was raised in Buenos Aires until moving with his family to El Cajon, California at age 14. Two days after his 18th birthday he dropped out of Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, and was arrested the same day over a dispute with a classmate. In 1992 he found himself homeless in San Francisco while studying at San Francisco Art Institute on scholarship, which extended for a duration of 3 months. He later received his BFA from Cooper Union in New York City and an MFA from Columbia University. Caivano is an artist that mainly creates large scale drawings with ink on paper inspired by, among other sources, the processes of nature and the linear compositions of Japanese block prints. Selected recent shows include the Whitney Biennial, New York (2004) PS1, New York (2004)’Games for a Blackout Machine’ Guild and Greyshkul, New York (2006) ‘Floral Veins’ Richard Heller Gallery, Santa Monica and ‘Traps, Screens and Offerings’ Carlier Gebauer (2006). He currently lives and works in Chinatown, New York.
